Hello! This post is part of the National Scrapbook Day Blog Hop hosted by the Facebook Group “For The Love Of Pretty Paper”

First of all – the small print: if you are following the hop you should have arrived here from Ruth’s blog. To be in with a chance of winning the blog hop prize you will need to comment on this post (and on all the blogs in the hop) and when you have completed the hop, return to the Blog Hop thread on “For The Love Of Pretty Paper” and leave a comment to let us know you have been all the way around the hop. Visitors who leave the same (or seen to be the same by the organisers) comment on all the blogs will not be eligible for the prize. The closing date for Blog Hop entries is Monday 8th May at 10pm. Only UK addresses are eligible for the prize due to postage costs. Good Luck!
After your visit here please hop on to UK Scrap Addicts and if you lose your way or you want to start at the beginning of the hop you can find the complete list on the Facebook page here or on Fiona’s Blog.

snipThe theme for the Blog Hop is                                    ‘A Favourite Technique’ ...

I have chosen cutting into photographs.

I love to do this with photos that are important as a memory but not particularly interesting as a photo.

image

The photo I’ve used here has a central element, the bit with the birds lined up, and the rest is important context but boring … so I’ve cut it to isolate the ‘good’ section and to make the rest more pleasing to the eye.

image

I want to cut my photo into a 9-section grid with the focal point, the birds, in the centre. I start by cutting either side of the birds.

image

Next I cut each of the 3 strips into 3, making uneven sections.

image

At this point it is a good idea to carefully turn over the photo pieces and number them so that piecing them together later isn’t too much of a jigsaw.

image

I reassembled the photo onto the matting cardstock with even(ish) spaces between the pieces, allowing the matting to show through.

image

Next I trimmed round the photo and stuck the whole piece to the background cardstock, then completed the page as normal

The Line Up

That’s it from me.

Happy NSD.

I've never used this technique and never thought of using it. I may have to try this today 😍

Hi Sue, long time no see but loving the photo idea and your usual choice of bold colours! My boy is helping me today so we are going to try your idea later! Lots of love xx

A reminder of how effective this technique is, thanks.

What a great technique. I've seen this done a few times but have never been brave enough to cut up the photo. Fantastic idea to start with a less interesting one because it really seems to add to the effect. Thank you for giving us the tips and confidence to give it a go.

A really effective technique to enhance less interesting photos-what a great idea to number the photo pieces too!

How brave, I know that these days it is easy to reprint if you need to, but still scared to get scissors onto photos. This looks great though so may give it a try.

Lovely technique - very effective 😊

How brave, despite being able to reprint easily these days it still seems wrong to cut up a photo. This does look great though so may have to give it a try.

I love the technique and will definitely give it a try.

I used to have a stencil to do this when I first started scrapping, had forgotten all about it :)

Ooh - I like this. I've got tons of photos I haven't scrapped because they don't seem to tell a story - this technique might help make those photos more appealing.

Wow love this idea. I've never seen photos cut into a grid like this and it really works. Another one to try myself.

I did this with one of my pages of florida when we were on a beach hunting for sharks teeth, the mosaic worked well as my hubby and son were in the distance too, it took a while to do but I love the effect....I must do this again soon

Love your layout and the technique shall give this a try!

WOW - love what you have done with the "no so great" photo, I will definitely be using this technique for my "less than amazing" photos, what a great idea to add interest. Super job BJ

Gosh Susan how clever you are. Will very definitely try this at some point, Although I rather suspect there is a skill in knowing which photos could be used this way!!

Niki Rowland said...

Love the look you've achieved here Sue, I've done this before but only in vertical lines so like this variety. It doesn't work with people photos though which I discovered when I cut through someone's face once! xx

Rita T said...

That is a really clever technique for not so interesting photos. Will be giving this a go soon

Scrap8ooker said...

Ooh I will have to be brave and try this! The effect is fantastic. Hope you don't mind a spot of scraplifting. Thanks!

That's really effective - great layout!

I'd be hesitant to cut up my photo in case I chopped someone's head off but this looks fab! X

Kirsty said...

Great technique, you get all the photo but the focus on the main part, fab!

Wow this looks so cool! I have cut a photo once but only into 3 pieces. Time to look at my photos a little differently. TFS

I haven't don't this technique in years! Maybe I'll try it again - I certainly have some pics that fit the bill of not being too interesting!

Margot/NZ said...

I did this once or twice many years ago - thanks for the reminder of how useful it can be to highlight the 'interesting bits'!

Natalie Weller said...

Such a cool technique I will try this

Love your LO. Not sure I'm brave enough to cut any of photos up maybe I'm too protective of them lol

Antonia said...

Not sure if I'm brave enough for this technique! Although I do love how it brings attention to what is going on in the bit in the middle!

Amanda said...

What a great way to add interest to a plain-ish photo.

The bravery of cutting up a photo! I'm worried that I'll just ruin the photo! Or that cutting the photo won't have the effect I want it to have.
