CUASMS August Sketch

 

This month’s Come Up And See My Sketchings group sketch was found for us at Sketch Support by Alison. Thank you, Alison.

 

The sketch did exactly what a sketch is designed to do – provide a starting point. Using a sketch helps to get you started and prevents that tedious for me anyway bit of scrapping where you shuffle elements endlessly around the page. For my layout I substituted the three photos with one wide landscape picture. I did toy with the idea of chopping the photo into three sections but couldn’t bring myself to cut across little Joseph’s legs. I embellished the page with images cut from the Cricut Boys will be Boys cartridge, more suited to my subject than butterflies. And here’s my finished page, recording four-month-old Joseph on the point of crawling.

August Sketch Challenge

I hope you've been enjoying our beautiful summer – time in my craftroom has meant dragging myself in from the garden so there’s not been a huge amount of crafting going on. I did, however, make time to scrap these two photo of Leo and Sophia – can’t help but smile at them! I was aiming at some symmetry on this page to reflect the title, which I had in mind from the start – unusual as my normal MO is to decide on a title when everything else is finished.

Better late than never! So sorry if you came looking yesterday other stuff just got in the way Anyway, here are my cards for July – I have seen this done for anniversaries and birthdays so I thought the idea would make a great Christmas card. Next time I’ll make the card a smaller size – it took forever to stick on all the numbers! I'm not sure if you can see that the 25s are layered and Stickled?

So what’s BtCR all about? I have been making 5 a month since January and will have at least 50 Christmas cards all ready for the festive season. Ha! I'm planning to Beat the Christmas Rush. … talking of which, how fab is this card from Karen? I'm really into pop up boxes at the moment thanks to a super tutorial by Susibee at our retreat earlier this year.

UKS House Challenge

I was asked to draw a sketch for this month’s house challenge on UK Scrappers and here it is …

You don’t have to be in a UKS team to have a go at the challenges but if you are it’s 30 bonus points if you upload to the gallery before 31st July.

This week’s challenge was a very interesting one by the lovely Jen of Wear Crafts who gave us a formula to work with. Jen said …

“One of my new croppers was struggling with starting points for her layouts and then looking for ways to improve her work... which made me think hard about my scrapping process... so I realised, I adopt a kind of 'Good, Better, Best' approach.
I start off with 'Good' - basic shapes from paper arranged in a pleasing manner with co-ordinating colours, photo placed and title/journaling located.
Then, I do 'Better' - take quick photo of placement and remove all the bits to ink edges, add glitter, embossing or whatever to the basic shapes, refer to the photo and glue everything down.
Finally, I do 'Best' - add all the extra embellishments... clips, buttons, ribbons, icons, ink squirts ... whatever I want to add.”

So here are my efforts …

I started with my photo and the fabulous Simple Stories Good Day Sunshine which, coincidentally I bought from Wear Crafts.

 

 

 

 

 

I decided I didn’t like the blue background and that the big title was overwhelming the page. I added a few embellishments from the kit and matted the photo to give it some definition on the page.

 

 

 

And my final page with more embellishments, embroidered circles to reflect the blue hoops in the photo and some journalling.

CUASMS July sketch

We have started a new sketch group on UK Scrappers called Come Up and See My Sketchings. The group filled up amazingly quickly! It is specifically for scrappers who like to use a sketch as their starting point. I love a sketch – it saves me hours of shuffling bits round the page trying to take the plunge to glue something down! If I don’t use someone else’s sketch I’ll rough out one for myself before I start.

In the group we are taking turns to set a monthly challenge and I have drawn up the sketch for July …
